Tsavo: A Stunning Gem That Epitomizes A Great East African Safari Excursion. A Sojourn That Echoes Runaway Memories.
Under the envelop of the gazebo a ear splitting splash followed by heightened grunts awoke me beckoning me to think it was daybreak! The hippos in a hurry to reach the pool must have run at bursting pace to enter the water just before sunrise above the azure skies.
Still sleepy and not feeling like climbing out of the warm bed, I peer outside the tent, it was still dark and the hippos were grunting so close by. I opened the tent and in the flashlight, round eyes spaced apart looked back at me out of the dark.
This is only 4am and the hippo pod was abuzz. Whatever happened to the thinking that hippos graze out throughout the night - this is certainly a Tsavo safari.
The pool dazzled underneath the reflection of a clear star spotted sky. Now, wide awake, I scan the pond for more life and several meters from the grunting hippos, asleep in the edge of the pool is a crocodile. I can not get back to sleep now with plenty happening just under my veranda.
It is clear now to see how Finch Hatton, the famed fan of Karen Blixen and author of 'Out of Africa' could be so captivated with Tsavo that his cite '"Tell them I'll be in Tsavo", has turned the beautiful luxury tented camp in the middle of Tsavo West park to a hallmark of acclaim around East African safaris circuits.
Situated around innate pools filled with waters from the Chyulu Hills and the impressive Kilimanjaro, it's heartening to trek the camp environs. You just cannot avoid this walk!
Just after a healthful morning gourmet, a guide follows us for the trek highlighting the bird's species plus the crocodiles. Observing the hippos open their colossus mouths revealing crimson yellowish enamel you would not want to get near. Hippos are effective killers when it's a choice between their territory and the intruder.
A Greyish crowned heron on a hippo's flip side gives a sigh of satisfaction as the hippo makes its way across the shallow pool. Modest footed African jacanas perch on the suspended leaves of the water lilies and a terrific white egret stands by the shores studying us.
On the veranda of a tent, several colorful kingfishers dive inside the pools as the bejeweled Malachite and grey headed kingfishers on the bushes look on as two young crocodiles bask in the sun nearby the tent.
"This is actually an entire ecosystem" notes the guide. "There are zero fences so the animals have the right of way." "During drought, elephants, giraffes, water bucks wander here when water is lacking elsewhere".
It's unbelievable that the trek across the grounds has lasted through breakfast to lunchtime. A spotted monitor lizard scampers in front of our pathway while it disappears into the dense shrub. Soon we get to the crocodile nursery by the pool where the spring water bubbles.
A tiny crocodile lies about the exposed stone oblivious of our presence. The crystal clear pool of bubbling water is extremely busy with the young charges. We marvel at how this little one shall later grow into a giant sized crocodile. What a morning!
